<title>World Refugee Day rally: planning meeting</title>
<description>The year 2011 has so far seen a continuation of business as usual regarding the continued detention and treatment of refugees. There are currently 6659 refugees in detention, with over 1000 children. Despite the Labors promise not to detain children before the last election they have so far only pledged to house 268 children of those currently in detention in the community. With construction of another 1900 bed detention centre in Darwin and a 400 bed centre in Tasmania the number of refugees detained for long periods of time is going to continue to rise. Over 50% of refugees have been in detention for longer than 6 months.

<title>Public meeting on deportation threat to Afghani asylum seekers</title>
<description>&amp;#8203;A &quot;Memorandum of Understanding&quot; was recently signed by the Australian and Afghani governments, along with the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR. It would allow forced deportations of detainees, potentially thousands of them, including unaccompanied minors. Most of them would be Hazaras, targeted by the Taliban and Pashtun nationalists. What is such an extreme policy really about?

<title>Urgency Appeal for Refugee Claimants Support Service, Brisbane</title>
<description>Lifeline Brisbane&#8217;s Refugee Claimants Support Service is desperately seeking funds to provide community-based support for asylum seekers.

You can either donate now or set up your own fundraising activity and invite your friends/networks to support your cause. It might be a cycling challenge, a triathlon race, a special music event or a birthday gift option.
