The year 2011 has so far seen a continuation of business as usual regarding the continued detention and treatment of refugees. There are currently 6659 refugees in detention, with over 1000 children. Despite the Labors promise not to detain children before the last election they have so far only pledged to house 268 children of those currently in detention in the community. With construction of another 1900 bed detention centre in Darwin and a 400 bed centre in Tasmania the number of refugees detained for long periods of time is going to continue to rise. Over 50% of refugees have been in detention for longer than 6 months.
