The Annerley Literacy Centre works with migrants and refugees. We have received support from Brisbane City Council to provide free internet access and training to refugees in Brisbane. We now have a network of eight PCs that clients can use.
Refugees Online
is a project that is attempting to bridge the digital divide for people who have come to Australia as refugees. It seeks to make the internet more accessible through providing free access and training, as well as developing some basic multilingual web-based resources. Initiated by Brisbane City Council, access points are available at the Annerley Book and Literacy Centre (part of Anglicare Refugee and Migrant Services) and the Refugee Claimants Support Centre (in Windsor). The internet is potentially an extremely valuable resource for people who have had a refugee experience. The internet is constantly growing and can be used to access news from all over the world in many languages, listen to music or radio from many countries, stay in touch with friends overseas, research information about any country, learn new skills and much more. More and more, computer and internet skills are becoming essential literacy skills.
