This Just Comment from the Edmund Rice Centre features churches speaking out on the dangers of deporting Asylum Seekers to their home countries. Includes a number of case studies of Asylum Seekers who have been killed upon return.  www.erc.org.au/issues/text/dd03.htm

"In a report compiled by The Coalition for the Protection of Asylum Seekers, there are cases of deportees on their return being murdered, imprisoned or disappeared. People who fled from generalized violence may not normally qualify for obtaining refugee protection visa in Australia. This factor can be compounded by restrictive interpretation of refugee convention, with downright disregard by the Australian government about the safety of any 'illegal migrants (as defined by the authorities)' that were deported." - U Ne Oo. SIEV-X

On Friday 19 October 2001, an overloaded fishing boat carrying 397 asylum seekers sank in heavy seas south of Indonesia on its way to Christmas Island. Although 120 passengers were still alive after the initial sinking, just 44 survived, after spending 20 hours in the water. There are calls for an investigation into possible Australian Government involvement in this disaster.

The Refugee Action Committee in Canberra has produced a "SIEV-X dossier" which aims to summarise the issue a 4-page dossier, in PDF format, and can be downloaded from their website at http://www.refugeeaction.org/downloads/siev-x.pdf

Kevin Bates - Razor Wire is Sighing - Song

Kevin Bates states that he wrote this song "after hearing of a woman detained in Woomera in 2001. Her husband, who came here first, had already been processed and was out in the community. Because no one told her the right words to say when she was seeking her status as an asylum seeker, she languished in Woomera for many months, with her three children, sick, without access to proper medical or legal assistance."
