SIEV-X
On Friday 19 October 2001, an overloaded fishing boat
carrying 397 asylum seekers sank in heavy seas south of
Indonesia on its way to Christmas Island. Although 120 passengers were
still alive after the initial sinking, just 44 survived, after spending 20
hours in the water. There are calls for an investigation into possible
Australian Government involvement in this disaster.

The ‘ Temporary Protection , Permanent
Uncertainty ’ report, which is the largest study of its kind to be
published in Australia, provides a comprehensive snapshot of the
experiences of TPV holders, who have been living in the community now for
more than two years. The report looks at the barriers to resettlement and
considers some of the strategies for addressing these issues. According to
the report’s author, Dr Greg Marston, “the research findings directly
implicate the TPV policy in the mental suffering and material disadvantage
of refugees currently living in Australia.” Read

The report discusses Australia's efforts to reduce the UN's overall budget to
zero nominal growth, the range of UN commissions with which Australia

Documentary
A film by Sarah McDonald and Kate Durham about the Tampa
affair, the detention of asylum seekers on Nauru and the human costs of
Operation Relex. The highlight is the
two women's secret filming on Nauru, where they managed to meet many
refugees before being kicked off the island (Kate was assaulted and yelled
at by the head of IOM the international organisation for migration-
which runs the camp)

Behind the Fence - Video
Documentary
A 10 minute documentary about detention in Australia, made
by QUT students. The film made it to the finals of the National
Competition, Student Video of the Year. Viewpoints from an ex-detainee

Refugees Online website
This site, available in ten languages has been set up
as a starting point for refugees, to help them make full use of the
Internet in their native language. It has links to non-English
resources for news, email, search engines, Internet tutorials,
language dictionaries and much more. Refugees Online seeks to make the internet more accessible through providing free
access and training, as well as developing some basic multilingual
web-based resources. Initiated by Brisbane City Council, access points
are available at the Annerley Book and Literacy Centre (part of
