Nundah Community Centre Open Day 14 September 2008

This will be held on the same day as Nundahfest, a celebration for Nundah Village.  This will be an opportunity to introduce new staff members, new programs and see the

Interested in volunteering for RCSC?

The Refugee Claimants Support Centre is currently seeking a number of Volunteers. These positions available include Employment Supporters, Administration workers, Computer Tutors, Community Research and Development Worker, Book Keeper, Client Welcomer and Cooking Facilitator, Activities Director and Project Worker. RCSC will be running a Volunteer information session on Thursday the 18th of September 2008 from 5.30pm - 6.30 pm for those who would like to learn more about the the centre and how they can get involved. RCSC are asking that people who are planning to attend this session email or call to let them know numbers beforehand.

The Multicultural Development Association (MDA) is currently recruiting volunteers and has scheduled an INDUCTION PROGRAM comprising 4 workshops held over 4 evenings.

§ Dates of Induction Program: 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th September 2008

§ Time: 5.30pm – 8:30pm each evening.

§ Venue: MDA: 289 Vulture Street, South Brisbane

§ Access to meeting area is via 289 Vulture St., (NOT 512 Stanley St.)

Lord Mayor's Multicultural Round Table Scholarship Program

The Lord Mayor's Multicultural Round Table is now accepting applications for the 2009 Business Scholarship program. Entrepreneurial-minded members of Brisbane's refugee and migrant communities who want to make a positive contribution to the city are encouraged to apply.

Scholarships are available in certificate and diploma level qualifications in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management at Southbank Institute of Technology and Sarina Russo Job Access.

Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Round Table: call for applications

The Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Round Table is now calling for scholarship applications from emerging entrepreneurs from multicultural backgrounds. This is a joint project between The Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Round Table and Southbank Institute of Technology.

On successful completion of an initial six week course, students will be selected to continue studying to complete a Diploma of Business - Specialisation in Entrepreneurship. Please read on for more details.

QPASTT jobs available

The Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (QPASTT) is a non-government organisation providing a range of services to refugees, especially survivors of torture and trauma. These include counselling and clinical services, specialist children’s and youth programs, community development work, research and innovation.

QPASTT is seeking to fill two positions in its Brisbane Office. Applications are being sought from suitably qualified people for the following positions:
- Counsellor/Advocate – Early Intervention Team
- Counsellor/Advocate(Children and Families) – Counselling and Support Team

Are you interested in becoming an interpreter in your community?

New Interpreters Project: The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd is pleased to announce a new national project funded by the Australian Government to increase the number of interpreters in new and emerging languages in metropolitan areas, and languages where there are shortages in rural and regional areas. Eligible applicants will attend a workshop to help them prepare to work as an interpreter and apply for a NAATI accreditation test and/or recognition. This project is fully funded and eligible candidates will be subsidised for the full cost of the workshop and application and assessment fees.

Job Preparation Training Course

The Multicultural Community Centre is commencing its Job Preparation Training Course on the 1st of September - 12th of September 2008. This training is designed to assistant people from Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds [refugees and migrants] in developing vital skills that will help them to overcome some of the hurdles stopping them from securing jobs. Upon completion of the training, our Employment Consultants provide assistance in finding jobs for the participants.

Legal support needed

The Refugee Claimant Support Centre currently have a client, a young African lady, that has received a negative decision from the Department of Immigration.  She has been given a hearing date with the RRT on September 10th and is in desperate need of legal support to lodge her submission prior to this date.  The Centre are urgently seeking the support of a lawyer to assist her through this process as soon as possible. If you can pffer some assistance please contact Bess or Pebble on 3357 9013.

GetUp! are partnering with a range of refugee advocacy organisations to send a petition to the federal Immigration Detention Inquiry being conducted by the joint standing committee on migration. Chances like this don't come very often - to end a regrettable chapter of Australian history that caused unimaginable suffering to some of the worlds most desperate and downtrodden.
